Quaker Faith & Practice – February reading

In preparation for a possible revision of Quaker Faith & Practice, we’re focusing on a chapter or two each month. February’s reading: Chapter 9: “Beyond Britain Yearly Meeting” and Chapter 18 “Faithful lives”  (Online version here: http://qfp.quaker.org.uk/chapter/9/ and http://qfp.quaker.org.uk/chapter/18/)


Quakers and a new economy  |  Reading and discussion group

Quakers call for an economic system that has equality, justice and environmental sustainability at its heart. We work on welfare and inequality, corporate accountability and ethical finance, while exploring principles and practical steps towards a ‘new economy’. Eva at our Local Meeting is setting up a reading and discussion group to focus our thoughts on a new economy. Let her know at Meeting if you want to join in. The first meeting will be on Sunday 19 February – see below.


Sunday 5 February  |  Newcomers’ forum

After Meeting for Worship at Friends House, starting at 12.30pm. Newcomers’ forum is an opportunity for those new to Quakerism, and others, to bring up any matter for discussion.


Saturday 11 February  |  Creating new housing: what can we do?

Friends House, 10:30am to 4.00pm. Discussion and workshops focusing on what can be done to help with the lack of good affordable housing in the UK. Lots of interesting subjects under consideration. Sunday 19 February  |  New Economy Reading Group

After Meeting for Worship at Friends House, starting at 12.30pm. This reading group will explore how a Quakerly economic system could work in practice focussing on the series of seven booklets published by the new economy project at Quaker Peace and Social Witness. The first meeting on 19 February will be discussing the booklet ‘What’s the Economy For?’ – an online version is here.


Sunday 26 February  |  Aspects of Quakerism: No Other: A Journey into Oneness

After Meeting for Worship at Friends House, starting at 12.30pm. In February for our regular “Aspects of Quakerism” Quaker Jennifer Kavanagh will be leading a discussion based on a lecture Jennifer gave to South African Friends in 2016.

Charity of the month  |  Money for Madagascar

Money for Madagascar funds projects aimed at tackling many of the issues facing Madagascar today including extreme poverty, loss of biodiversity, poor health, lack of food security, and limited access to education. The charity also responds to emergencies in Madagascar, from cyclone relief to feeding programmes for street children and their families.  The charity addresses Quaker concerns of poverty, inequality and sustainability. Every Sunday  |  Foodbank collections

We’re collecting for our local foodbank at Sunday Meetings for Worship. Please bring along your donations of long-lasting food such as boxes of cereal, tins of fish or meat, long life milk, sugar, long-life fruit juice and instant coffee.

Saturday 18 March  |  Kindlers: Recognising Spirit

Friends House, 10am to 4.30pm. Cost of £10, no advance booking necessary. A workshop which aims to be an open experiment to discover what lies universally in our humanity, as
source of creativity, worth-ship and love. More details here.

Monday 27 March  |  Feeding the Darkness

6.30pm (with hot drinks from 6pm), Friends House. Shining a light on state sanctioned torture through story, poem and song, this is an immersive performance commissioned by Q-CAT Quaker Concern for the Abolition of Torture. The performance lasts about an hour and is followed by a short discussion. Free with a collection at the end. More details here.
